Meeting people on Bloom

Mixer, Meetups, and Seniors are for real LGBTQ+ adults. A little care goes a long way — on a first coffee, a walk, or a night out.

I’m meeting someone

Optional check-in with a friend

Going to meet someone from Mixer? Bloom can ask if you’re OK after 90 minutes. If you don’t tap I’m OK in the next 15 minutes, we email or text up to three people you chose. Optional — you don’t have to use it. This still works if you close Bloom.

  1. Step 1

    Save up to three friends

In Settings, or when you tap I’m meeting someone, add a first name plus an email and/or an Australian or New Zealand mobile.

  2. Step 2

Start a check-in when you go out

On Mixer or in Messages, tap I’m meeting someone. You can cancel it if plans change.

  3. Step 3

Bloom asks if you’re OK after 90 minutes

A screen pops up, and we text or email you a one-tap I’m OK link. You then have 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4

If you don’t tap, we reach your friends

We email and/or text the people you saved. They are not told who you were meeting, or where you are.

You can tap I’m OK or Cancel any time if you’re home early. Bloom does not share your location, and this is not a substitute for calling 000 in Australia or 111 in New Zealand if you are in danger. Bloom keeps checking even if you close the website or the app.

Save friends in Settings, or when you start a check-in. See what you and your friends get — sample texts and emails. Nothing is sent from that page.

Be a good date

  • Say what you’re looking for

Romance, friends, or both — Bloom works best when you’re honest. Don’t treat a friendship space like a hook-up app.

  • Use your real photos

Recent photos of you. If you use identity check, people can trust the Mixer card they’re looking at.

  • Reply like a human

You don’t owe anyone a novel. If you’ve made a plan, show up or cancel early — ghosting after “see you Saturday” hurts.

  • Ask before photos

No one owes you nudes or extra pictures. If they say no, that’s the answer.

Before you meet

  • Chat on Bloom first

Stay in Messages until you trust them. That way you can hide and report if something feels off.

  • A call can help

A short voice or video chat is a simple way to check they match the photos.

  • Tell a friend

Share the time, the place, and their Bloom name with someone you trust. Check in when you get home.

  • I’m meeting someone

On Mixer or in Messages, tap I’m meeting someone. After 90 minutes Bloom asks if you’re OK — on the app, and by text or email to you with a one-tap I’m OK link. You then have 15 minutes. If you don’t tap, we email or text up to three friends you chose — not who you were meeting, not where you are.

First dates

  • Public, easy to leave

Coffee, a walk, a gallery, or a Bloom meetup. Pick somewhere busy. Arrange your own way there and home.

  • You can leave anytime

You don’t owe a second hour. “I’m going to head off” is enough. Trust your gut — it’s data.

  • Watch your drink

Don’t leave your glass. Don’t feel pressured to drink, or to go somewhere quieter on a first meet.

Slow down if…

  • They ask for money

Never send cash, gift cards, or crypto. Bloom staff will never ask you to pay someone you met here.

  • They rush you off the app

Pushing for WhatsApp, your address, or intimate photos right away is a reason to hide them.

  • The story doesn’t add up

If age, photos, or location feel off, tap Stay safe on their Mixer card. Report so we can look.

If you need help

  • Hide and report

On Mixer or in a chat, use Stay safe / Report. We review reports. Email hello@bloomapp.com.au if you need us.

  • In danger in Australia or New Zealand

Call 000 in Australia, or 111 in New Zealand. Bloom can hide an account. We are not the police.

  • Someone to talk to

    Australia: 1800RESPECT 1800 737 732 (family violence). QLife 1800 184 527, 3pm–midnight, LGBTQ+ peer support. New Zealand: OutLine 0800 688 5463, 6pm–9pm, rainbow peer support.
